DIY Christmas decorations for families
09 December, 2021
It’s officially Christmas – hooray! There’s no need to brave the shops in search of Christmas decorations if you’re hoping to get into the festive spirit. Give one of these craft ideas a try with your children this weekend.
Spare ribbon Christmas trees
What do you do with those pieces of spare ribbon – you know, the ones that are too short to properly tie around a Christmas gift, but too long to throw out with a clear conscience? You turn them into these adorable Christmas tree ornaments, that’s what! You’ll need an assortment of spare ribbon, some colourful beads, and some string or fishing wire – that’s all. So easy, and so beautiful; especially when you make them en masse to hang from your tree, front door, or windows.
Round festive wreath
We love this DIY wreath tutorial so much. Not only can you make it super festive by adding some small tinsel, red and green flowers, or glittery stars, but it will also beautifully adorn your home year-round if you opt for more pared-back decorations. All you will need is a basic wreath, some wire, hot glue, wire cutters, ribbons in the colour of your choice, and some fresh, dried, or faux flowers and plants. They also make for beautiful gifts, too.
Toilet paper roll Christmas trees
Before you toss out that cardboard loo roll, stop: it might just provide the perfect base for your next festive DIY project! Coley Kuyper Art dreamt up these toilet paper roll Christmas trees, and we couldn’t love them more. They’re beautiful, zero waste, and child-friendly, too. You can whip out a pair of scissors and cut them, then let the kids loose with the paints so that they can make their own.
Grinch ornament
Who knew crafting your own little Grinch ornament would be so easy?! There’s not much you can’t create with a clear bauble, but even we were blown away by the creativity of this DIY ornament. Simply find some green feathers, a permanent marker, and that all-important clear bauble – oh, and a bit of patience and artistic skill. You draw the Grinch face then let your kids fill the bauble with the green feathers. Easy! You can try this Frosty the Snowman one next.
Christmas sock gnomes
It doesn’t get much cuter than these DIY Christmas gnomes – or more simple! Round up your old socks, pick up (or DIY) some white pom poms and grab the other materials listed in the blog post and you’ll be well on your way. You can hang them from your tree, line them up on your windowsill or place them on the table to add some cuteness to your table setting.
