Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I enrol my child?

A: The first step is to tour Edge Early Learning South Brisbane. This gives you an opportunity to meet our educators, explore our nurturing environment, and understand how we can provide an experience that is best suited to your child. After your tour, you’ll receive an enrolment form to secure a spot or join the waitlist.

Q: Does our centre have availability or a waitlist?

A: We accept enrolments for future start dates at our Southbank childcare and kindergarten, so whether you’re trying to enrol your child to start next month, or further down the track, we can assist you. Our Family Engagement Team can provide you with our current availability in each classroom, and help you join our waitlist if we don’t have a position for your child when you need it. Call us on 07 3517 0629 between 8am and 4pm, Monday to Friday.

Q: What is the Child Care Subsidy (CCS)?

A: The Child Care Subsidy (CCS) is a federal government subsidy designed to help Australian families with the cost of approved childcare. The amount you receive depends on your family’s income, the type of care, and your recognised activity hours. You will need to apply for the Child Care Subsidy through MyGov before your child starts at Edge South Brisbane so that it can help reduce the cost of your childcare from day one. Each eligible family’s CCS is paid directly to Edge Early Learning, and we are then able to invoice families for any ‘gap’ fee payable for each day of care. Learn about CCS.

Q: How do I apply for the Childcare Subsidy (CCS)?

Applying for the Child Care Subsidy is simple; however, you should apply early to ensure you are ready to receive subsidised care in time for your child’s first day at Edge South Brisbane. To apply for the CCS:

  • Set up a MyGov account (if you don’t have one already) and ensure you have a Customer Reference Number
  • Set up your Centrelink online account through MyGov
  • Prove your identity through documentation to be able to claim payments (you can do this online or in-person at Centrelink)
  • Gather supporting documents including payslips, birth certificate, and medical records
  • Submit supporting documents in your Centrelink online account or the express plus Centrelink mobile app. You can also mail, fax, or visit a service centre.
  • Lodge your application via MyGov.
  • Once this is lodged, Edge Early Learning, as your childcare provider, will input your enrolment details and lodge your application for you to get it fully processed.
  • The Government will then notify you to confirm your subsidy eligibility and entitlement (how much they will subsidise off your childcare cost).

For more information on the application process, including how to do the childcare subsidy assessment, visit Services Australia website.

Q: How can I estimate my childcare fees?

A: You can use our easy Childcare Subsidy Calculator to get an estimate of your out-of-pocket fees for Edge Early Learning South Brisbane. Simply complete the questions in our CCS calculator and input your details, and the calculator will provide an indication of your potential childcare subsidy and resulting out-of-pocket daily fees (the actual childcare cost you will be invoiced for each fortnight).

Q: Do you offer 'Free Kindy'?

A: The Queensland Government offers eligible Queensland children up to 15 hours of Kindy per week free*, for 40 weeks of the year, generally aligning to Queensland primary school terms. This subsidy further reduces the cost of Kindergarten at Edge South Brisbane, especially where our families are already receiving the Childcare Subsidy (CCS) to subsidise their childcare costs. As we operate long daycare hours for busy families, parents and carers of Kindy children simply need to pay the cost of any Kindy program hours over the 600 ‘free’ hours. These are often referred to as ‘wrap-around’ hours. Your Childcare Subsidy will also continue to subsidise your ‘wrap-around’ hours so that your child can get the most out of their Kindergarten education (yes! In Kindy you could be eligible for two subsidies at once to reduce your fees). Navigating Kindy Funding and the CCS can be tricky. You can always ask our South Brisbane Centre Directors, the Edge Family Engagement Team on (07) 3517 0629 or find out more about ‘Free Kindy’ here.

At Edge Early Learning South Brisbane, our Kindergarten program runs year-round with extended hours from 6:30am to 6:30pm to meet your family’s needs. Each child’s learning goals are personalised and tracked across the 11 Key Learning Areas in Edge’s exclusive Teach A Rainbow education program to build school‑ready skills such as early literacy, numeracy, independence, self-help skills, emotional regulation, and social skills.

* ‘Free Kindy’ subsidy totals 600 hours of subsidised Kindergarten per year.

Q: What’s the difference between Kindy at Edge and community Kindergarten?

A: There is no difference to the quality of the Kindy education program offered at Edge South Brisbane versus a community or stand-alone Kindergarten. Our program meets both the Early Years Learning Framework (national curriculum) and the Queensland Kindergarten Learning Guideline. What you will find sets us apart is our Teach A Rainbow education program in Kindy which is exclusive to Edge and is taught by a degree qualified Early Childhood Teacher. The other main difference between Edge South Brisbane’s Kindy and other standalone providers is family flexibility. Our Childcare and Kindergarten run year-round, with long daycare session hours (how long we can care for your child each day) for those families that need it. This means you don’t need to find alternative care for your child during the school holidays, or outside of the 8am–3:30pm Kindy program each day.

Only want to attend our centre for ‘Free Kindy’ across two days each week? That’s fine too! We offer a flexible 7.5 hour session for families who simply want their child to participate in Free Kindy for the 7.5 hour days, two days each week.

Q: What do I need to bring?

A: At Edge Early Learning South Brisbane, we aim to make life as easy as possible for you, so we supply most of the necessities including sustainable nappies, wipes, sunscreen, and nutritious meals (breakfast through to a late snack) to ensure your child is well-cared for throughout the day. However, there are a few items that you will need to bring to ensure your child has everything they need:

  • Hat and drink bottle (supplied on enrolment)
  • Spare clothes (3 sets)
  • Bedding sheets for sleep time
  • Any comfort items (dummies)
  • Nappy cream (requires pharmacy label)
  • Formula (pre-measured in dispenser) & baby bottles (pre-filled with water) / Breastmilk (clearly labelled)

Q: Where is the centre located?

A: We’re conveniently located on Cordelia Street, just a 5 minute walk from South Bank Train Station and TAFE Queensland’s Southbank campus. Plus, we offer on-site basement parking for added ease and accessibility.

Our location gives children a view of the city, inspiring children’s curiosity, turning everyday sights—like a passing fire truck—into rich learning opportunities.

Q: Do you provide food?

A: Yes! Your child will enjoy nutritious meals designed to be age-appropriate and nutritionally balanced to support healthy growth and development. Featuring a variety of whole foods and culturally inspired dishes, we ensure we meet all dietary needs and allergy requirements—ensuring every child receives nourishing meals each day.

Q: How do you communicate and partner with families?

A: We know that children thrive when families and educators work together. That’s why our South Brisbane childcare has an open-door policy, welcoming you to connect and collaborate with our educators and centre leadership team about your child’s growth, interests, and goals. At Edge, your child’s development is a shared journey, and we invite you to be involved through regular updates including:

  • Weekly: Highlights of your child’s learning and classroom activities throughout the week.
  • Monthly / Bi-monthly: Snapshot of your child’s goals, progress, and meaningful moments. Plus, a monthly centre newsletter with team updates and upcoming events.
  • Twice yearly / Annual: A comprehensive summative assessment of your child’s progress over the prior six months, or a school transition report for kindergarten children preparing for school. We also involve families when it’s time for your child to transition to the next room, to support a smooth and confident transition.
  • Upon Request: Face-to-face conversations about your child’s development.

Q: How do you look after children's safety and wellbeing?

A: At Edge Early Learning South Brisbane, the safety and wellbeing of every child is our highest priority. We provide a secure, nurturing long daycare environment where children can explore, learn, and grow with confidence. Our team is committed to protecting children through consistent daily practices, evidence-based programs, and strict adherence to national child safety standards and Edge child safeguarding policy and procedure.

We work closely with child safety organisations such as Life Ed and Bravehearts to strengthen personal safety education within our program. Our Kindergarten children participate in Life Ed’s Harold’s Little Learners program, building confidence, resilience, healthy habits, and personal safety skills—including understanding body boundaries, emotions, and social awareness.

At Edge, your child’s safety and wellbeing is more than just a policy, it’s part of everything we do. Our S.A.F.E. framework (Spot, Act, Fix, Explain) empowers educators to speak up if they see or suspect something isn’t right, fostering a culture of accountability and vigilance. Our Active Supervision policy supports staff to plan, position, look, and listen to ensure all children are continuously supported and monitored in a safe learning environment. In addition, all supervisory and senior staff complete ongoing Child Protection and Mandatory Reporting training to stay up to date on best practices.
