Young minds find balance through daily yoga
18 June, 2024
As the world unites in celebration of International Yoga Day on Friday June 21, children at Edge Early Learning Mount Barker – Grantchester Ave reap the benefits of practicing the age-old traditional meditation and stretching exercise daily.
Daily yoga practice is part of Edge’s health and wellbeing program which educates and encourages young ones on healthy eating, physical activity and encouraging active lifestyles through a range of programs such as daily yoga.
International Yoga Day is acknowledged around the world annually on June 21 and celebrates the physical exercise routine that has existed for centuries, connecting the mind, body and soul.
Edge children as young as two-years-old are benefitting from yoga – including activities such as breath work, stretching, relaxing and ‘ommm-ing’ – as part of their regular daily wellness routine.
Edge Mount Barker – Grantchester Ave incorporates yoga practices in their toddler and two preschool rooms daily.
Centre Director Educator, Sue Guyett, said incorporating yoga into children’s daily routine has helped them learn how to manage emotions and improve their strength, flexibility, and mindfulness.
“Yoga has a monumental number of benefits, especially with young children. We’ve found introducing daily yoga practice helps children with afternoon restlessness and better concentration,” Sue said.
“The children love it and look forward to the daily yoga program. They are able to have a re-set and learn how to regulate and better understand their emotions and feelings. We also use breathing techniques as a mindfulness strategy for when we are feeling upset, overwhelmed or frustrated.”
Located in the Aston Hills community on Grantchester Ave, the purpose-built early learning centre is equipped with spacious indoor/outdoor learning areas designed for children to explore and discover new interests. The outdoor childcare areas are designed to promote nature play and are equipped with bike trikes, climbing forts, sandpits, and veggie gardens.
