We all want our children to enjoy eating healthy food. But if you’ve ever watched a toddler declare broccoli as their number one enemy or refuse dinner just because it “looks different”, you’ll know it’s not always as easy as it sounds.
The good news is that building healthy eating habits doesn’t require perfection. It’s not about creating the perfect meal or expecting children to eat everything on their plate. It’s more about the small, everyday experiences that help children feel confident around food, become curious enough to try something new and develop healthy habits gradually over time.
According to The Australian Children’s Education & Care Quality Authority (ACECQA), children can consume up to two-thirds of their daily food intake while attending early childhood education and care, making daycare an important place for developing healthy eating habits.
Children don’t develop healthy eating habits overnight. It happens through everyday interactions, trying something new because a friend is eating it, helping mix the muffin batter or discovering they actually like capsicum after all.
That’s why healthy eating is simply part of life at Edge childcare centres, with fresh-prepared meals, hands-on cooking experiences and lots of encouragement along the way.
It’s in these early years when children begin discovering what they like, what they’re willing to try and how they feel about food. Those experiences don’t just shape what’s on today’s plate; they can influence eating habits for years to come.
But childhood nutrition is about more than just providing healthy meals. It’s about helping children build confidence around food, encouraging them to explore new things and creating positive experiences that make healthy eating feel enjoyable, not stressful.
Remember, healthy eating isn’t about children loving every vegetable you put in front of them or finishing every meal. It’s about offering variety, reducing the pressure and creating lots of opportunities for children to try new foods in a calm environment.
At Edge Early Learning, healthy eating isn’t something we only talk about during mealtimes, we’ve incorporated it into our learning programs. Our childcare teams encourage children to explore different fruits, vegetables and ingredients, learn where food comes from, get involved in age-appropriate cooking experiences and enjoy meals together with their friends.
These experiences help children:
At all of our QLD, SA and ACT childcare centres, qualified in-centre chefs or cooks offer nutritious meals every day using quality ingredients.
You never know… today’s “no way” could become tomorrow’s favourite food!
“I love introducing new flavours in a fun and positive way because every meal is an opportunity to build confidence, encourage curiosity, and inspire a lifelong love of healthy food”, says Edge Early Learning Milton’s Cook, Leon.
For some children, childcare is somewhere they discover foods they may never have tried before. Seeing friends enjoying the same meal and an encouraging environment can often make children more willing to give something new a go.
One thing we’ve seen over the years is that children are much more likely to try food when they’ve helped make it.
Instead of seeing a meal as just something that’s put in front of them, they become part of creating it. That’s why cooking experiences are part of our learning program at Edge Early Learning centres. They’re a great way to build confidence, ignite curiosity and encourage healthy eating habits, while also giving your family inspiration for simple healthy recipes for kids and families to enjoy together at home.
“One of my favourite parts of being a childcare cook is getting children involved in cooking. Seeing their confidence grow as they mix, pour, chop, taste and create is incredibly rewarding.”
For many families, food allergies and dietary requirements are something they think about every single day. It’s not always easy, but having a childcare team you can trust is essential.
At Edge, we work closely with you to understand your child’s individual dietary needs and make sure they’re supported every day they attend childcare. Behind the scenes, our team follows clear food safety procedures and multiple meal checks, so you can feel confident your child is receiving the right meal every time.
If you’d like to learn more about how we manage allergies and dietary requirements, take a look at our article ‘Food Allergy Safety in Childcare’, or simply have a chat with your local Edge team.
We know busy family life means not everyone has time to plan complex meals.
The healthy eating habits children develop at childcare become even more powerful when they’re reinforced at home. If you’re looking for simple healthy recipes, practical nutrition advice or fresh meal inspiration, explore our tips and nutritious recipes that you can cook together.
Is your child going through a fussy eating phase? Don’t worry, you’re definitely not alone. It’s one of the most common concerns we hear from families, and the good news is that it’s often a normal part of childhood.
There’s no quick fix for fussy eaters, but we’ve found that taking the pressure off can make a real difference. Children are much more likely to explore new foods when mealtimes feel relaxed, they’re surrounded by friends enjoying the same meal, and they’re encouraged to try something new without being forced.
Children’s Health Queensland encourages parents to keep introducing new foods without pressure, noting that research suggests it can take 15 or more exposures before some children accept a new food. Patience really does pay off.
At Edge Early Learning, we always focus on creating positive food experiences, offering lots of variety. We celebrate the small wins, whether that’s trying a single bite of a new vegetable or helping prepare a healthy snack. Over time, those little moments can help build confidence around food and encourage healthy eating habits that last a lifetime.
“Being a childcare cook is about so much more than cooking meals. It’s about nourishing growing bodies, encouraging healthy eating habits, and creating moments of comfort and joy with every plate. Every meal is prepared with care, knowing that good food helps children learn and grow,” says Edge Early Learning Morayfield East’s Cook, Danielle.
