Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I enrol my child?

A: The first step is to tour your preferred Edge Early Learning and Kindergarten centre by booking a tour. This gives you an opportunity to meet our Ferny Grove educators, explore our nurturing environment, and understand how we can provide an experience that is best suited to your child. After your tour, our Family Engagement Team will either send you an enrolment form to secure a spot or join the waitlist.

Q: Does our centre have availability or a waitlist?

A: We accept enrolments for future start dates, so whether you’re trying to enrol your child to start next month, or further down the track, we can assist you. Our Family Engagement Team can provide you with our current availability in each classroom, and help you join our waitlist if we don’t have a position for your child when you need it. Call us on 07 3517 0629 between 8am and 4pm, Monday to Friday.

Q: What is the Child Care Subsidy (CCS)?

A: The Child Care Subsidy (CCS) is a federal government subsidy designed to help Australian families with the cost of approved childcare. The amount you receive depends on your family’s income, the type of care, and your recognised activity hours. Learn about CCS.

Q: How do I apply for the Childcare Subsidy (CCS)?

Applying for the Child Care Subsidy (CCS) is easy, but it’s a good idea to apply early so you’re ready for your child’s first day at Edge Ferny Grove. Follow these steps to apply for the CCS:

  • Create a MyGov account (if you don’t have one) and get a Customer Reference Number (CRN)
  • Set up your Centrelink online account through MyGov
  • Prove who you are by showing documents, either online or in person at Centrelink, to be able to claim payments
  • Get your documents ready, like payslips, your child’s birth certificate, and any medical records
  • Submit your documents through your Centrelink online account or the Express Plus Centrelink app. You can also mail, fax, or go to a Centrelink service centre
  • Submit your CCS application via MyGov after uploading the required documents
  • Once your application is lodged, Edge Early Learning will update your enrolment details and submit your application to ensure it’s processed
  • The Government will then notify you of your subsidy eligibility and provide information about the amount of subsidy you are entitled to

For more information on how to apply and check your subsidy, visit Services Australia website.

Q: How can I estimate my childcare fees?

A: You can use our easy Childcare Subsidy Calculator to get an estimate of your out-of-pocket fees for our centre. Simply input your details, and the calculator will provide an indication of your potential subsidy and fees.

Q: Do you offer 'Free Kindy'?

A: Our government‑approved Kindergarten program is delivered by a qualified Early Childhood Teacher and experienced educators to give children a confident start to school.

Eligible families can access ‘Free Kindy’ funding (15 hours per week, 40 weeks per year)* at our centre to reduce out‑of‑pocket costs. Our centre team or Family Engagement Team, can help explain how ‘Free Kindy’ funding from the QLD government can be applied on top of your existing Childcare Subsidy, to further reduce your out-of-pocket costs. Find out more about ‘Free Kindy’.

At Edge Early Learning, our Kindergarten program runs year-round with extended hours to meet your family’s needs. Each child’s learning goals are personalised and tracked across the 11 Key Learning Areas to build school‑ready skills such as early literacy, numeracy, independence, self-help skills, emotional regulation, and social skills.

* ‘Free Kindy’ subsidy totals 600 hours of subsidised Kindergarten per year.

Q: What’s the difference between Kindy at Edge Ferny Grove and community Kindergarten?

A: There is no difference in the quality of the Kindy education program offered at Edge Ferny Grove versus a community or stand-alone Kindergarten. Our program meets both the Early Years Learning Framework (national curriculum) and the Queensland Kindergarten Learning Guideline.

What sets us apart is our Teach A Rainbow education program. This program is exclusive to Edge Early Learning and is taught by a degree qualified Early Childhood Teacher. Another difference is flexibility for families. Our Childcare and Kindergarten are open all year (except public holidays), with long daycare session hours (how long we can care for your child each day) for families who need longer care each day. This means you don’t need to find alternative care for your child during the school holidays or outside of the 8:30am–4pm Kindy program each day.

Only want to attend our centre for ‘Free Kindy’ across two days each week? That’s fine too! We offer a flexible 7.5 hour session for families who only want their child to participate in Free Kindy for the 7.5 hour days, two days each week.

Q: What do I need to bring?

A: At Edge Early Learning Ferny Grove, we aim to make life as easy as possible for you, so we supply most of the necessities including sustainable nappies, wipes, sunscreen, and nutritious meals (breakfast through to afternoon tea) to ensure your child is well-cared for throughout the day. However, there are a few items that you will need to bring to ensure your child has everything they need:

  • Hat and drink bottle (supplied on enrolment)
  • Spare clothes (3 sets)
  • Bedding sheets for sleep time (nursery room sheets supplied)
  • Any comfort items (dummies)
  • Nappy cream (requires pharmacy label)
  • Formula (pre-measured in dispenser) & baby bottles (pre-filled with water) / Breastmilk (clearly labelled)

Q: Where is the centre located?

A: We’re conveniently located on the corner of Arbor Street and McGinn Road in Ferny Grove, just across from Ferny Grove State High School, with native Australian bird artwork by local artist Carley Cornelissen on the fence and interior to inspire children’s creativity. We’re only 650m from Ferny Grove Train Station and 500m from Ferny Grove Shopping Village Centre. Plus, we offer on-site parking for added ease and accessibility.

Our central location allows us to easily enjoy local community excursions, including visits to Ferny Grove State School’s prep facilities and the school’s Under 8s community day. We also visit Ferny Grove State High School to watch drama performances.

Q: Do you provide food?

A: Yes! Your child will enjoy nutritious meals designed to be age-appropriate and nutritionally balanced to support healthy growth and development. Featuring a variety of whole foods and culturally inspired dishes, we ensure we meet all dietary needs and allergy requirements — ensuring every child receives nourishing meals each day.

Q: How do you communicate and partner with families?

A: We know that children thrive when families and educators work together. That’s why our Ferny Grove childcare has an open-door policy, welcoming you to connect and collaborate with our educators and centre leadership team about your child’s growth, interests, and goals. At Edge, your child’s development is a shared journey, and we invite you to be involved through regular updates including:

  • Weekly: Highlights of your child’s learning and classroom activities throughout the week.
  • Monthly / Bi-monthly: Snapshot of your child’s goals, progress, and meaningful moments. Plus, a monthly centre newsletter with team updates and upcoming events.
  • Twice yearly / Annual: A comprehensive summative assessment of your child’s progress over the prior six months, or a school transition report for kindergarten children preparing for school. We also involve families when it’s time for your child to transition to the next room, to support a smooth and confident transition.
  • Upon Request: Face-to-face conversations about your child’s development.

Q: How do you look after children's safety and wellbeing?

A: At Edge Early Learning Ferny Grove, we are deeply committed to creating a safe, caring environment where every child’s wellbeing is always our top priority.

  • Our dedicated team prioritises safeguarding children through comprehensive policy and procedure, daily practices, educational programs, and adherence to national child safety principles.
  • We actively collaborate with respected child safety organisations including Life Ed and Bravehearts to further strengthen personal safety education within our programs.
  • Our Kindergarten children enjoy exclusive year-long access to Life Ed’s Harold’s Little Learners program, which explores emotional resilience, body safety and how to enforce clear boundaries, healthy routines including how to stay safe online, and building confidence and independence ahead of school.
  • All supervisory and senior team members complete ongoing Child Protection and Mandatory Reporting training.
  • Our S.A.F.E. framework (Spot, Act, Fix, Explain) empowers educators to speak up and take action whenever something doesn’t feel right, fostering a strong culture of accountability and transparency.
  • Our Active Supervision policy ensures all educators consistently Plan, Position, Look, and Listen to ensure safe learning environments at all times.
