Author Book Signing Day at Edge Wynnum
29 November, 2022
Children and families of Edge Wynnum were treated to a book signing this month after two local authors paid a visit to the centre.
One of the visitors was an aspiring author and illustrator, Victoria Matthews, who is also a parent at Edge Wynnum. Victoria recently published her first book journal and is now due to publish her first-ever children’s book.
Titled Lunar’s Book Journal, Victoria’s first book is written in diary form and comes with a sticker sheet. It was designed to prompt children to complete book reviews and inspire them to read and reflect through fun and engaging literacy activities.
Victoria is a mum of three to Max, Tommy and Alice, plus their Blue Merle Border Collie, Lunar, who is the star of the book. She always loved storytelling, but since having children, her creative expression meant she started to create bedtime stories that featured her own family.
When Victoria’s eldest child started school and fell in love with reading, it was then that the idea of producing a book journal was born. Mid this year, Victoria decided to bring more stories to life that could be shared with other children and families by teaching herself how to illustrate digitally and create picture books.
Reading and storytelling with children has a range of benefits from promoting cognitive development, stimulating curiosity and imagination, exploring emotions, helping with understanding language and communications skills, as well as assisting with the ability to focus and concentrate. These benefits and more are what prompted Victoria to become an author, having also worked within the Education sector for the past 6-years.
The book signing event, hosted at Edge Wynnum on Tuesday 15th November, was Victoria’s first event to promote the book. There was plenty of excitement from the children to have an author pay them a special visit.
Victoria will be releasing her first children’s book titled Star in a Jar, and children at Edge Wynnum had the opportunity to name two fairies who will be main characters. The selected winners will be acknowledged in the book upon release.
The children also got to meet and have their books signed by Dannika Patterson, who is a popular children’s book author having written Beach Kindy, Jacaranda Magic, Giving, Day and Night and many more.
Edge Early Learning is pleased to be able to support local authors by bringing them into our centres for meet and greet opportunities with the children.
The book signing was prompted by our passionate team at Edge Wynnum who work closely with families and the local community. Edge value the relationships we have with our families and believe that incorporating these relationships into children’s learning will provide a better future for everyone.
