We’re known for our golden beaches in this corner of Australia, but there is just as much fun to be had away from the coastline. Give one (or all!) of these hinterland day trips a try these winter school holidays.
Sunshine Coast Hinterland
Perched high on the Blackall Range in the Sunshine Coast’s hinterland are two quaint towns well worth a visit. Lovers of country lanes and panoramic views will delight during the drive from Maleny to Mapleton, and there’s plenty to see and do along the way. A rainforest mountain range, a stunning dam and a national park complete with a cascading waterfall are just some of the natural wonders that are easily accessible from Montville. Hikers can find adventure along the Sunshine Coast Hinterland Great Walk (a range of experiences can be enjoyed along this 58km trail, from half-day walks to three-day walks with camps) and day trippers will love Kondalilla Falls. In town, a walk down Montville’s Main Street feels like a step back in time. Rich mountainous farmlands and a temperate climate create the perfect conditions for local farmers to grow the freshest, tastiest produce and both Montville and Maleny’s many restaurants certainly make the most of it. From the Maleny Botanic Gardens to the plethora of quaint, homely cafes and stores, you’ll find it hard to say goodbye as you drive back down the mountain range and home.
Scenic Rim
Steeped in history and authentic farmland, the Scenic Rim is worth a visit year ‘round, but particularly in winter. Spanning from Tamborine Mountain and Beechmont all the way out to Boonah and Lake Moogerah, there is so much to explore in this part of the world. Start your day with a trek to Canungra, where you’ll not only discover how the Scenic Rim got its name, but also find yourself perfectly positioned to explore the wider region. Bushwalkers will love getting lost (figuratively) in the Lamington and Tamborine National Parks, particularly at Binna Burra and Curtis Falls. To discover the region’s history, why not pay a visit to the Boonah War Memorial, Beaudesert Historical Museum or Harrisville Historical Society Museum? The whole family will love O’Reilly’s Tree Top Walk in Canungra and the many farm tours (including a camel farm!) available in places like Peak Crossing and Harrisville. And, for a truly ‘out-of-this-world experience’ head to the south-eastern-most part of the Scenic Rim and discover horse riding, bush walking and the pristine rock pools of the Lost World.
Toowoomba
Looking for a country escape that you can do in a day from your home base? Toowoomba residents are in no doubt that they live in one of the most picturesque parts of our country, and you can easily find out for yourself these winter holidays. There’s no better time of the year than winter to hit the Warrego Highway and explore Southern Queensland Country – with the days so mild, it’s actually worth ditching the car and pulling on your sneakers for an up-close-and-personal experience, on foot, with this area’s natural wonderment. From the 4km Scenic Circuit in the Bunya Mountains to ‘The Pyramid’ in Girraween National Park, ‘walks with a view’ abound in the greater Toowoomba area. In town, the plentiful gardens of Queensland’s flower capital promise the perfect spot for a picnic or a lazy stroll, while cultural and historical attractions like the Cobb & Co. Museum and Russell Street promise to keep the children entertained.
