Teach a Rainbow: shaping early learning through play and discovery
17 January, 2025
“Teach A Rainbow” is a thoughtfully designed program implemented to enhance the curriculums of Edge Early Learning centres nationwide, fostering exceptional, child-centred learning experiences across all locations.
The program is inspired by the inclusive symbol of the rainbow, representing diversity, hope, and connection and is driven by children’s natural curiosity, integrates core learning areas and vital developmental skills, helping each child grow in a supportive, joyful environment.
By early 2025, Teach A Rainbow will be fully integrated across all Edge centres in Queensland, South Australia, and the Australian Capital Territory, providing children with a cohesive, vibrant learning environment that nurtures each child’s unique strengths and builds a strong foundation for lifelong learning.
This integration has been shaped by trials at selected centres throughout 2023, which influenced a rollout via a carefully planned phase approach in 2024. Within each phase, emphasis was placed on educator training, practice weeks, and dedicated resources to ensure Edge centres were fully prepared to deliver this high-quality program.
“Teach A Rainbow is a truly transformative step in our commitment to providing outstanding early education,” said Annie Bryce, CEO of Edge Early Learning.
“Our program’s focus on diversity, creativity, and inclusion means that every child’s curiosity and ideas will be valued and explored in a meaningful way.”
Each element of Teach A Rainbow is designed to meet children at their developmental level, fostering exploration, self-expression, and essential life skills.
“Our goal is to empower children to be active participants in their own learning,” explained Annie. “When children are engaged and their voices are heard, learning happens naturally and meaningfully.”
With a curriculum that spans social, emotional, cognitive, physical and language development, Teach A Rainbow supports each child’s holistic growth.
Learning experiences and play opportunities are directly linked to the five outcomes outlined in Belonging, Being, and Becoming: The Early Years Learning Framework for Australia V2.0.
“Children are encouraged to think critically and creatively, tackling experiences and themes that help build essential problem-solving skills,” added Annie. “Through Teach A Rainbow, children explore big ideas and learn to see the world in all its wonderful diversity.”
Teach A Rainbow also involves families as partners in their child’s learning journey. Parents and guardians can access detailed insights into their child’s development and progress, enhancing the partnership between educators and families.
Educators play a central role in delivering this new curriculum. With ongoing support from Program and Practice Leaders, they will be fully equipped to create learning experiences that meet National Quality Standards and foster an inclusive, engaging classroom environment.
“We believe that empowering educators is key to empowering children,” Annie emphasised. “By investing in our educators and providing the resources they need, we are investing in a brighter future for every child.”
