Food Allergy Safety in Childcare: How We Keep Every Child Safe
07 May, 2026
Food allergies in childcare have become more common across Australia, and many families know how stressful that can feel when their child first starts care.
At Edge Early Learning, it’s important to us that parents feel confident their child is safe at every mealtime. That’s why we follow a structured and consistent process in each of our centres to support children with food allergies, dietary requirements, or individual meal plans.
Our focus is simple: every child receives the correct meal, safely, every time.
Food allergy management in early childhood is supported by national guidance from organisations such as ACECQA, the National Allergy Council and Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ), which all provide clear advice on safe food handling, allergy awareness and reducing risk in childcare settings.
How meals are checked and served safely
Before a child receives their meal, it is carefully checked using a multi-step process:
- The educator serving the meal checks and signs off that it matches the child’s requirements
- A second educator then reviews the meal and co-signs to confirm
- The Nominated Supervisor also sights the meal plan and verifies the food before it is served
This layered process is essential. It helps us ensure multiple checks are completed before food reaches a child. These types of structured food safety systems also align with best practice recommendations for allergy management in education and care services.
Visual systems that help keep mealtimes safe – the red bowl system
At our childcare centres, we also use simple visual systems to make things simple during busy mealtimes. If a child requires an alternative meal, it is served in a red bowl. This is an easy way for Edge Early Learning educators to quickly identify that the meal is different and requires extra attention.
Each red bowl is clearly labelled with the child’s name and identification, so it always goes to the correct child.
Working closely with families
We are committed to keeping children with food allergies safe. When a child has a food allergy, dietary requirement or medical management plan, our educators work closely with families to ensure we have the most accurate and up-to-date information from the very beginning.
This helps us to understand each child’s individual needs and ensure those requirements are reflected in their daily care. We also encourage families to keep us informed of any updates to allergies, medical advice or dietary changes as they come up. When we work with families, we can create a consistent and safe environment for every child.
Our commitment to your family
We know trust comes from consistency and care, and we are committed to keep all children safe at every meal.
If you ever have questions about your child’s dietary requirements or allergy management, our team is always here to talk you through our processes.
